When President Roosevelt introduced our Social Welfare system it was initially intended to cover the citizen and their family.
Republican resented the Democrats. Democrats resented the Republicans. Compromises were made and today after 75 years and several iterations, we still have a Social Security System intact. It is in jeopardy, yes. But we have one which serves millions and millions of people.
Roosevelt – MESSAGE TO CONGRESS ON SOCIAL SECURITY. JANUARY 17,1935
Federal control over all funds through trustees in the Treasury of the United States.
At this time, I recommend the following types of legislation looking to economic security:
1. Unemployment compensation.
2. Old-age benefits, including compulsory and voluntary annuities.
3. Federal aid to dependent children through grants to States for the support of existing mothers’ pension systems and for services for the protection and care of homeless, neglected, dependent, and crippled children.
4. Additional Federal aid to State and local public health agencies and the strengthening of the Federal Public Health Service. I am not at this time recommending the adoption of so called “health insurance,” although groups representing the medical profession are cooperating with the Federal Government in the further study of the subject and definite progress is being made.
These were all good intentions to help the working class take care of their family. Thus our greatest social program was birth from the Great Depression.. As time and social economic situations occurred, several addendums were added to the Social Security Act. It was ripe for the pickings.
Everyone wanted the piece of the pie and Roosevelt stated eloquently:
We can never insure one hundred percent of the population against one hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life, but we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.
Fraud and greed seeped in – (Acts against Americans).

All in all, this reminds me of our great debate over our National Health Care reform. People are in an uproar about those who will be left behind and not covered. Are we our brothers’ keepers? The answer is yes we are but not to the detriment of ourselves. We have to keep in mind that what we do today will affect the next generation and some of use who voted on theses acts may still be living to see the affects. I urge all to do your own research and not to allow politicians and friends to influence you:

A Social Security Program Must Include All Those Who Need Its Protection.” RADIO ADDRESS ON THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY ACT. AUGUST 15, 1938
You, my friends, in every walk of life and in every part of the Nation, who are active believers in Social Security:
The Social Security Act is three years old today. This is a good vantage point from which to take a long look backward to its beginnings, to cast an appraising eye over what it has accomplished so far, and to survey its possibilities of future growth.
Five years ago the term “social security” was new to American ears. Today it has significance for more than forty million men and women workers whose applications for old-age insurance accounts have been received; this system is designed to assure them an income for life after old age retires them from their jobs.
In the future, if the Health Care bill passes, how will we appraise it? Will it be what we initially wanted or will it be some monster grown in attempt to satisfy everyone? We tend to think in alls.
Take care of home first before we take care of the world. Save America. Save the World.
Slightly Altered? But that is my point of view.

When children notice how we treat our President then something is wrong. It is ok for us to disagree but we are one nation and we have who we have as our current President.
Over the last 8 years, pure greed got the best of us. CEOs and corporations raped America. Americans were spending like there was no tomorrow – ‘Pay Peter tomorrow’. ‘I deserve this’. Now it is a time for us to take a look at the dysfunction of America and really analyze what direction this country should go in. As Americans; we should expect nothing less.
